JAEKEL Henry Compiled by Gordon Freegard based on research by Stephen Newbey and Merilyn Stewart Henry Jaekel was born in South Australia on 23rd October 1873 as Carl August Hermann Jaekel at Hansborough, South Australia to Johann Friedrich August Jaekel
(04/06/1846-27/09/1919) (a Farmer) & Maria Jaekel (nee Noack) (24/07/1850-17/08/1881)
(m21/02/1871). He arrived in Western Australia during the 1890s. He worked for a time as a prospector at Coolgardie, and on one of his trips to England he met Mary Eleanor
Gavagan. Mary was born on 07/08/1877 at Drumloose, Westmeath, Ireland to Christopher
Gavagan (c.a.1833-29/04/1895) (a Farmer) & Honoria Gavagan (nee Casey)
(c.a.1849-13/04/1925) They married in 1901 either in England or at Coolgardie.

The couple had three children: After the prospecting years in Coolgardie - where two of his children were born - Jaekel turned to farming. He selected land at Ongerup in 1912 and in 1913 took part in the excavation works for the Ongerup Railway Dam. In 1915 he relocated to another property within the district, and in 1924 purchased the property “Tarbunkenup” from the Moir family. His working-class affiliations are recorded as Labor, and his religion as Roman Catholic.
