JAEKEL Henry

Henry Jaekel was born in South Australia on 23rd October  1873 as Carl August Hermann Jaekel at Hansborough, South Australia to Johann Friedrich August Jaekel (04/06/1846-27/09/1919) (a Farmer) & Maria Jaekel (nee Noack) (24/07/1850-17/08/1881) (m21/02/1871).  He arrived in Western Australia during the 1890s. He worked for a time as a prospector at Coolgardie, and on one of his trips to England he met Mary Eleanor Gavagan. Mary was born on 07/08/1877 at Drumloose, Westmeath, Ireland to Christopher Gavagan (c.a.1833-29/04/1895) (a Farmer) & Honoria Gavagan (nee Casey) (c.a.1849-13/04/1925) They married in 1901 either in England or at Coolgardie.
Mary later died on 23rd March 1922 aged 42 years at Guildford and was buried st Karrakattta Cemetery, Western Australia.

The couple had three children:
Ada Mary Jaekel born on 09/01/1903 at Coolgardie, W.A. She married in 1928 Lawrence Cornwall Moir (1901-13/07/1928) and after he died remarried in 1930 to Nelson Lemmon (22/03/1908-20/03/1989 aged 80 years). She died on 29/11/2008 aged 105 years. She had 3 children (?Harold C. in 1928) Tony Moir, Joan M. Lemmon in 1930 & John Lemmon in 1932.
Albert Henry (Bert) Jaekel
born on 28/05/1905 at Coolgardie, W.A. He married in 1946 to Frances Gertrude Brown (nee Schumann) (1909-16/07/1992 aged 83 years). He died on 08/01/1975, at Safety Bay, W.A. and is memorialised at Fremantle Cemetery, W.A.
 Ernest Francis (Frank) Jaekel
born on 03/01/1908 at Coolgardie, W.A. He married on 07/04/1940 to Jean Constance Schumann (1919-17/06/1979 aged 60 years). He died on 07/08/1987 aged 79 years at Gnowangerup, W.A. and is buried with his wife at Esperance, W.A. They had 3 children: Michael Francis Jaekel he married in 1962 to Gweneth Edna Rule (1939-1996), Elinor Jean (Kate) Jaekel, she married in 1961 to George Leslie Houston & Alexis Geraldine Jaekel (15/09/1953-22/04/2002)

After the prospecting years in Coolgardie - where two of his children were born -  Jaekel turned to farming. He selected land at Ongerup in 1912 and in 1913 took part in the excavation works for the Ongerup Railway Dam. In 1915 he relocated to another property within the district, and in 1924 purchased the property “Tarbunkenup” from the Moir family. His working-class affiliations are recorded as Labor, and his religion as Roman Catholic.
Henry died
on 19th August 1962 at Gnowangerup in 1962 and was buried at the Gnowangerup Cemetery..
